It’s almost fall and you know what that means (besides pumpkin everything)?? Yummy, hearty and filling recipes!!I mean I make yummy stuff in the spring and summer but fall and winter make me think of comfort foods. Soups, chowders, mac and cheese, roast beef that has been cooking all day in the crockpot…there is just something about fall that screams Roast Beef to me…HA!
I was at the grocery store the other day and I saw the perfect roast. It was the perfect size, had just the right amount of fat on it, and was literally making my mouth water. I’m usually not a huge beef eater but sometimes I just get the urge and this piece of meat was just gorgeous. I really should have taken a pic of it…HA! And then it hit me! I had never shared my Mama’s roast recipe on this blog! What? How could this even be possible?? So I decided right then and there to buy that roast and share this recipe with y’all!
And don’t worry, my Mama wasn’t much of a cook so if she could do it then anyone can! It’s also really quick and easy and doesn’t require much prep!

My Mama always started by taking a fork and stabbing her roast multiple times. She then sprinkled it liberally with salt and pepper on both sides and set it aside. Then she chopped up an onion and spread it on the bottom of a crock pot and put the roast on top of it! Then she liberally doused the roast and onions with worcestershire sauce sauce (Lea and Perrins is best but any will do) and chopped up a clove (or two) of garlic and put it on top of the roast along with a bag of baby carrots and chopped celery. Then she cooked that bad boy on low all day long. I am impatient so I cooked it on high for 4-5 hours and called it good, either way is fine, as long as the meat gets done.
Right as it’s nearing the end she always threw in some peas and mushrooms because you don’t want to overcook those and have them turn to mush. Trust me when I say nobody likes mushy peas or mushrooms! Gross!

My Mama may not have been a great cook but what she did make us was yummy, fairly healthy meals that we loved. She really cared about what went into her kid’s bodies when we were growing up and I always wanted to do that with my own kids one day. I haven’t had any kids yet but I do have a dog that I treat like my child. I really don’t even think she knows she’s not a human so if you ever meet her don’t tell her she’s a dog!

I used to blog about her a lot more when she was a puppy but now she hates the camera and gives me the death stare or runs away if she sees it. She’s the same way about baths now too…HA!
Ever since Sophie was a puppy I have always been really conscious about the foods I was feeding her. She only got the best puppy food and now adult food and she is also a pretty picky eater. For the past two years or so I have been buying her Beneful Small Bites Dry Dog Food. She loves the different colored pieces (and eats them in a certain order) and I love that she’s eating good dog food!!
I noticed a few weeks ago that the bags had changed. At first I did an eye roll because like me, Sophie does not like change. My initial thoughts were “oh great, they have changed the formula and now she won’t eat it” but imagine my surprise when I found out that Beneful had actually made their food better featuring meat as the #1 ingredient and no sugar added? Good going Beneful!! Sophies food also has a new name, Beneful IncrediBites with Real Beef.

I bought a small bag, Sophie is 6 pounds so even the small bag takes us forever to get through, and brought it home. She knows what her food looks like and was doing her happy dance when she saw the bag so I opened it and put it on the floor to let her get a smell. Well not only did she smell is but she knocked the whole thing over and started gobbling it up! I think I will chalk that one up to a success!! But not for me because then I had to clean it all up…HA!
It’s important to note that dogs can be sensitive to change, especially when it comes to food. Even though I currently feed my dog Beneful, you’ll want to transition to the new Beneful recipe as you would for any new type of food. Check out these helpful feeding tips and tricks for how to make the transition smoothly.

I found the new Beneful formulas at my local Target with the other dog foods and have also seen it at WalMart and Kroger but you can get a free sample by clicking here!
